"A definitive performance… tonight, I feel that I have beengranted an insight into one of the great works of music"
Daily Information review of James Gilchrist’s Winterreise at The 2006 Oxford Lieder Festival
"Schubert’s Auf Dem Strom was equally revelatory: Gilchrist’s word-painting wonderfully judged"
The Guardian
James Gilchrist returns after his triumphant Winterreise at last year’s Festival with another of Schubert’s wonderful song cycles. Written in 1823, four years before Winterreise, the songs of Die schöne Müllerin are amongst Schubert’s finest mature works, taking us on a journey from the confident strides of a young man to his madness at rejection by the beautiful miller’s daughter.
James Gilchrist is one of the country’s leading tenors and is especially noted for his performances on the song platform. He and pianist Anna Tilbrook have performed this cycle together many times, and this is sure to be another insightful and deeply emotional concert.
