'Fettered Beings': Cultural Politics in Schubert's Vienna

Gavin Plumley speaker

Schubert lived in repressive times. It was said in 1828, the year he died, that an Austrian artist was a 'fettered being', who could not be liberal, nor philosophical, nor humorous. Gavin Plumley explores the tensions of living in Vienna under the aegis of State Chancellor Prince Klemens von Metternich.
