Shortly before Haydn’s departure for England in 1790, Mozart told him: ‘You have too little experience of the great world, and you speak too few languages’. Yet the move was to be the most fruitful and exhilarating of Haydn’s life. He received his doctorate in Oxford in 1791, and almost certainly performed in the Holywell Music Room.
