7pm: Pre-concert talk given by Gavin Plumley (free)
Roderick Williams is always a favourite of Oxford Lieder audiences as well as on stages the world over. As well as being a world-class singer, he is also a composer and has a long-proven commitment to new work, so we could not ask for a better exponent of contemporary music for this evening’s premiere. Charlotte Bray is a very exciting young British composer and our first-ever Composer in Residence. Several of her works are being performed this week, and tonight we hear a major new song cycle, commissioned by Oxford Lieder. Joined by the wonderful pianist Andrew West, Roderick Williams also performs some of Fauré’s most enchanting songs, and a rarely-heard cycle of songs by Vaughan Williams.
This concert is generously sponsored by Coutts.
