Study Event: Song in Translation

This event looks at the tradition of performing songs in English translation, once common practice and now largely faded. A series of short talks and readings, with a mini-recital at 3pm, will examine the history, philosophy and current state of song in translation. 

2pm Laura Tunbridge discusses the history of translated song in performance

2.30pm Philip Bullock examines the reception across national borders of poetry through song

2.40pm Coffee

3pm A short recital, illustrating the day's talks with Simon Wallfisch (baritone), Gemma Lois Summerfield (mezzo-soprano) and Sholto Kynoch (piano).

3.40pm Helen Abbott discusses French poetry in song and its seeming absence in English translation

4pm Richard Stokes talks about the art of translation and the differing approaches required for performance
