18 October 2011, 2:30pm - 3:30pm
Two study-days exploring Wagner and his influence on song in the late 19th Century.
Talk two given by Gulliver Ralston
'Wagner and the World of Dreams'
In this session we will investigate Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder and their relationship with Tristan und Isolde and his essay Beethoven (1870). What is the philosophy behind these songs? How did Wagner explore the ideas he later developed in Tristan? Looking at the texts and the music of these miniature masterpieces, we will uncover aspects of Wagner’s seductive dream world.
The Wesendonck Lieder will be performed in the lunchtime concert on 19th; click here for details.
