PASSES ARE NOW AVAILABLE TO THE SCHUBERT WEEKEND - CLICK HERE
This year’s Lieder Festival opens with a Schubert weekend, covering every song from Die schöne Müllerin in 1823 to Die Taubenpost, the last song he wrote, in 1828. In addition to performances of his much celebrated song-cycles Winterreise and Schwanengesang, performed by baritone Gary Griffiths and tenor Daniel Norman, Schubert’s part songs will be brought to life by four outstanding singers, joining festival director Sholto Kynoch.
The weekend begins with a programme which includes The Shepherd on the Rock performed by the exceptional soprano Birgid Steinberger, one of Austria’s leading recitalists, who is joined by pianist Graham Johnson, considered a world authority on Schubert’s songs, and internationally renowned clarinettist Joy Farrall. We are also delighted to welcome horn player Angela Barnes for a programme which includes the glorious Auf dem Strom for tenor, horn, and piano.
The Lieder festival began in 2002 with an all-Schubert programme, and during this year’s Schubert weekend we will also launch plans for a huge ‘Schubertiad’ in 2014, which will feature every song that Schubert wrote – well over 600.
We are very grateful to the Nicholas John Trust, the Kathleen Ferrier Memorial Scholarship Fund and The Helena Oldacre Trust for their generous support of concerts during this weekend.
