Oxford Lieder Schools' Project: Spring 2022 Update

24 January 2022

We are thrilled to be continuing our Schools Project this term, working again with 5 classes from St Francis C of E Primary School, Cowley.

This week the children are looking forward to visiting the Ashmolean museum where they will be focusing on the theme of ‘explorers’. First, they will be introduced to 17th-century English antiquarian, Elias Ashmole, and naturalist/collector/explorer, John Tradescant. They will go on to learn about a Tudor merchant ship, exploring exhibits and handling items from China and Japan such as silk, tea and spices. Each class will select an object to be their lyrical inspiration for a series of songwriting workshops hosted back at school by author Alan Durant. Composer John Webb will be joined by singer Daniel Norman and Jâms Coleman to work on composing melodies for the lyrics.

The project culminates in a public performance at St John the Evangelist Church in April in which the children will be joined by Daniel & Jams to perform their songs.
