Abends unter der Linde
German source: Kosegarten, Ludwig

Luisa:
Woher, o namenloses Sehnen,
Das den beklemmten Busen presst?
Woher, ihr bittersüssen Thränen,
Die ihr das Auge dämmernd nässt?
O Abendroth, o Mondenblitz,
Flimmt blasser um den Lindensitz!

Wilhelm:
Es säuselt in dem Laub der Linde;
Es flüstert im Akazienstrauch.
Mir schmeichelt süss, mir scheichelt linde
Des grauen Abends lauer Hauch.
Es spricht um mich, wie Geistergruss;
Es weht mich an, wie Engelkuss.

Luisa:
Es glänzt, es glänzt im Nachtgefilde.
Der Linde grauer Scheitel bebt __
Verklärte himmlische Gebilde,
Seid ohr es, die ihr mich umschwebt?
Ich fühle eures Athems Kuss
O Julie! O Emilius!

Evening under the Linden

Luisa:
Whence comes this indescribable longing,
which presses my troubled bosom?
Whence come you, bittersweet tears,
which moisten my dimming eye?
Oh evening glow, oh moonbeams,
shimmer paler beneath the linden tree!

Wilhelm:
The wind rustles in the linden leaves;
it whispers in the acacia bush.
It sweetly and gently flatters me,
the grey evening’s warm breeze.
It speaks around me like a spirit-greeting;
it drifts over me like an angel kiss.

Luisa:
The night glitters with passion.
The pale tree-tops quiver__
Transfigured heavenly creation,
Is it you who floats around me?
I feel the kiss of your breath
O Julie! O Emilius!
