Farewell, Master Sorrow!
I thank you with moist eyes!
Joy I take with me,
you I leave behind.
Be a kindly teacher
and lead all men to God;
in the darkest nights
reveal a gleam of dawn!
Let them know what love is
and they will be thankful;
some sooner, others later
will thank you with tears.
Then life will be radiantly happy;
every sorrow will smile gently,
and joy will hold in its embrace
the pure, tranquil heart.
