Text

Azadeh
English source: Nazli Tabatabai-Khatambakhsh

Free, freedom is my name
Spoken it is Azadeh
Azadi, freedom beats in my heart
Queen of hearts

My fingers run through my harp
Thoughts faster and faster
I combine with the sound
See patterns others have not found

Suddenly, I’m in the wild, a harp string between my fingers
Beside me, Prince Bahram Gur on his camel
Our sights blend, and I see what he sees,
Bitter is the taste on my tongue

Together we are in pursuit
I to deliver with grace
He to deliver with distaste
I challenge him, “can you hunt softly?”

His arrow slices, blood releases
My harp string snaps,
The gazelle falls, a discarded saddle
My Prince, I tell him not to follow
