Das Abendroth
German source: Kosegarten, Ludwig

Der Abend blüht,
Der Westen glüht!
Wo bist du holdes Licht entglommen,
Aus welchem Stern herabgekommen?

Es malt der Strahl
Das liebe Tal,
Das sie bewohnt, der Holden Holde,
Mit Rosengluth und mattem Golde.

Viel schöner blüht,
Viel wärmer glüht
Die blasse Rose ihrer Wangen,
Und weckt inbrünstiges Verlangen.

Drum Hesperus
Beut Gruss und Kuss
Der Herrlichen, der Tadellosen,
Und opfr’ ihr deine schönsten Rosen.

The Evening Song
English translation © Todd E. Sullivan

The evening blooms,
the west glows!
Where are you glowing, dear light,
from which star have you come down?

Its beam paints
the loving valley
in which she lives, the dearest one,
with rose embers and dull gold.

More beautifully blooms,
more warmly glows
the pale rose of your cheeks,
and the longing that burns within awakes.

Therefore Hesperus
captures the greeting and the kiss
of the magnificent one, the blameless one,
and offers to her your beautiful roses.
