Das Finden
German source: Kosegarten, Ludwig

Ich hab’ ein Mädchen funden,
Sanft, edel, deutsch und gut.
Ihr Blick ist mild und glänzend,
Wie Abendsonnengluth,
Ihr Haar wie Sommerweben,
Ihr Auge veilchenblau.
Dem Rosenkelch der Lippen
Entquillt Gesang wie Thau.

Ich hab’ das edle Mädchen
An meiner Hand gefuhrt;
Ich bin mit ihr am Staden
Des Bachs hinab spaziert.
Ich hab’ sie liebgewonnen.
Ich weiss, sie ist mir gut.
Drum sei mein Lied ihr eigen,
Ihr eigen Gut und Blut.

Finding
English translation © Todd E. Sullivan

I have found a maiden,
gentle, noble, German and good.
Her glance is as tender and radiant
as the evening sun’s glow,
her hair is like gossamer,
her eyes violet blue.
From the rosy goblet of her lips
springs forth song like the dew.

I led this dear maiden
by the hand;
I walked with her down
to the banks of the brook.
I have fallen in love with her.
I know that she cares for me.
Therefore, let my song be hers alone,
her treasure and lifeblood.
