Jüngst träumte mir, ich sah auf lichten Höhen 
Recently I dreamt I saw on sunlit hills
Ein Mädchen sich im jungen Tag ergehen,
a maiden wandering in the early morning, 
So hold, so süss, dass es dir völlig glich.

Before her knelt a youth.
Er schien sie sanft an seine Brust zu ziehen,

Doch bald verändert hatte sich die Szene,
But soon the scene had changed.
In tiefen Fluten sah ich jetzt die Schöne,
I now saw that fair maiden in the deep flood;
Wie ihr die letzte, schwache Kraft entwich,
her frail strength was deserting her.
Da kam ein Jüngling hülfreich ihr geflogen,
Then a youth rushed to her aid;
Er sprang ihr nach und trug sie aus den Wogen, 
he plunged after her and bore her from the waves; 
Und das war ich!
And that was I.

So malte sich der Traum in bunten Zügen, 
The dream was painted in bright colours; 
Und überall sah ich die Liebe siegen,
everywhere I saw love victorious,
Und alles, alles drehte sich um dich!
and everything was centred on you!
Du flogst voran in ungebund’ner Freie, 
You sailed on, free and unfettered.
Der Jüngling zog dir nach mit stiller Treue, 
The faithful youth followed you, silently, 
Und das war ich!
and that was I.

Und als ich endlich aus dem Traum erwachte, 
And when at length I awoke from my dream, 
Der neue Tag die neue Sehnsucht brachte,
the new day brought new longing.
Da blieb dein liebes, süsses Bild um mich. 
Your dear, sweet image was still with me.
Ich sah dich von der Küsse Glut erwärmen, 
I saw you warmed by the fire of his kisses;
Ich sah dich selig in des Jünglings Armen, 
I saw you blissful in that youth’s arms. 
Und das war ich!
And that was I.
