Es stürmt auf der Flur
German source: Rochlitz, Johann

Es stürmt auf der Flur, es brauset im Hain,
Es wogt in der Mächtigen Busen.
Wir sitzen im friedlichen Stübchen allein,
Uns winken die Gaben der Musen;
Von Stürmen und Brausen und Wogen geschieden,
Fühlen wir Frieden!

O liebe dein kleines verborgenes Haus
Und putze die einsame Zelle
Mit Blumen der sorglichen Liebe dir aus,
Verehrend die heilige Schwelle!
Nur Traute, von allem, was draußen, geschieden,
Fühlen noch Frieden!

Doch hast du im kleinen verborgenen Haus
Dein Herz, deine Sinne erquicket,
So gucke mit freundlichen Mienen heraus
In's Auge, das kummervoll blicket,
Und teile dein Herz und was dir beschieden!
Auch ihm gib Frieden!

The storm rages in the field
English translation © Oxford Song

The storm rages in the field, it roars in the grove,
It surges in the powerful bosom.
We sit alone in a peaceful little room,
The gifts of the Muses beckon to us;
Separated from raging, roaring and surging,
We feel peace!

O cherish your small, tucked-away home
And adorn for yourself the solitary chamber
With flowers of caring love,
Revering the sacred threshold!
Only in seclusion, separated from all that is outside,
Can one still feel peace!

But if in the small tucked-away house
You have refreshed your heart and senses,
Then look out with kindly demeanour
At the eye that gazes sorrowfully,
And share your heart and what is bestowed upon you!
Give peace to him also!
