Text & Translation

Es war mal eine Wanze
German source: Alfred Kerr

Es war mal eine Wanze,
Die ging, die ging aufs Ganze.
Gab einen Duft, der nie verflog,
Und sog und sog.
Doch Musici, die packten sie
Und knackten sie.
Und als die Wanze starb und stank,
Ein Lobgesang zum Himmel drang.

There was once a bloodsucker
English translation © Richard Stokes

There was once a bloodsucker
That stopped, that stopped at nothing.
It stank and stank,
And sucked and sucked.
But musicians seized it
And squashed it.
And when the bloodsucker died and stank,
A hymn of praise rose to heaven.

Es war mal eine Wanze,
There was once a bloodsucker
Die ging, die ging aufs Ganze.
That stopped, that stopped at nothing.
Gab einen Duft, der nie verflog,
It stank and stank,
Und sog und sog.
And sucked and sucked.
Doch Musici, die packten sie
But musicians seized it
Und knackten sie.
And squashed it.
Und als die Wanze starb und stank,
And when the bloodsucker died and stank,
Ein Lobgesang zum Himmel drang.
A hymn of praise rose to heaven.
