Goolyala ya dyeveetsa, pa dvarochkoo,
Nakolola nozhen'koo na pyenyochek,
Baleet maya nozhen'ka, da nyebol'no,
Lyubeel myenya meelyen'kee, da nyedolgo,
Nedolgoye vryemechko, na chasochek.
Payekhal moi meelyen'kii vgarodochek,
A ya za neem dyeveetsa, vosledochek,
Gnala, gnala dyeveetsa, nye dagnala,
Golosom kreechala – meel nye slyshal,
Platochkom makhala – meel nye veedel,
Tyazhelo vzdakhnoola – aglyanoolsya,
Aglyanoolsya yagodka – ee vyernoolsya!

Her Dance
English translation © Maggie F. Gottlieb

I walked in the garden, a young maid,
I hurt my foot on a tree-stump.
My foot aches, but not too much,
my sweetheart he kissed me, but not for long,
just a little while, just for an hour.
Then my sweetheart he left for town,
But I, a young maid, went after,
followed, followed, but I could not catch him,
cried out – my sweetheart did not hear,
waved my scarf – my sweetheart did not see,
I sighed so deep, he glanced back,
glanced back, my sweetheart – and returned to me!
