I bol’no, i sladko 'Its so painful, it's so sweet'
Russian source: Evdokiya Rostopchina

I bol'no, i sladko,
Kogda, pri nachale ljubvi,
To serdce zab'jotsja ukradkoj,
To v zhilah techet lihoradka,
To zhar zapylaet v krovi...
I bol'no, i sladko!..

Prob'jot chas svidan'ja, —
Potupja predatel'nyj vzor,
V volnen'i, v tomlen'i neznan'ja,
Boish'sja, zhelaesh' priznan'ja,
Nachnjosh' i prervjosh' razgovor...
I v muku svidan'e!..

Ne vymolvish' slova...
Nemeesh'... robeesh'... drozhish'...
Dusha, proklinaja okovy,
Vsja v rechi izlit'sja b gotova...
Net sily, net slova,
I tol'ko gljadish' i molchish'!

I sladko, i bol'no...
I trepet bezumnyj zatih;
I serdcu legko i razdol'no...
Slova polilis' by tak vol'no,
No slushat' uzh nekomu ih,—
I sladko, i bol'no!...

It’s so painful, it’s so sweet
English translation © Philip Ross Bullock

It’s so painful, it’s so sweet,
When you first fall in love –
Secretly, your heart begins to pound,
Then your veins pulse with fever,
And your blood runs hot…
It’s so painful, it’s so sweet!...

The moment of the meeting is at hand –
Lowering your telltale gaze,
Excited and anxious with uncertainty,
You’re afraid, you long for confession,
You begin to speak and then break it off again…
The torment of meeting!...

You can barely utter a word…
You’re struck dumb… you’re shy… you tremble…
Your soul, cursing its shackles,
Is ready to pour itself out in speech…
No strength, not a word,
You just stand there, staring in silence!

It’s so painful, it’s so sweet!...
The mad trepidation has passed;
And the heart feels light and easy…
Words could flow so freely now,
But there is no one to hear them –
It’s so painful, it’s so sweet!...
