Philip Ross Bullock
Philip Ross Bullock is Professor of Russian Literature and Music at the University of Oxford, Fellow in Tutor in Russian at Wadham College, and Director of TORCH (The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities). He read French, German and Russian at Durham University, before completing a DPhil in Russian Literature at Oxford, and held organ scholarships at both universities during his studies. His research has been supported by postdoctoral and mid-career fellowships from the British Academy, as well as research fellowships at the Institutes of Advanced Study in both Paris and Princeton. In 2009, he received a Philip Leverhulme Prize for Modern Languages and the Philip Brett Award of the American Musicological Association. He is the author of a number of books, including Rosa Newmarch and Russian Music in Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth-Century England (2009), The Correspondence of Jean Sibelius and Rosa Newmarchi, 1906-1939 (2011), and, most recently, Pyotr Tchaikovsky (2016). In addition to his academic work, he collaborates closely with a number of leading arts and cultural organisations, and has produced essays, given talks and provided translations for BBC Radio 3, ARTE, the Philharmonic Orchestra, Garsington Opera, WNO, Wigmore Hall, the Salzburg Festival and, of course, the Oxford Lieder Festival.
