O Muza placha, prekrasneishaya iz muz!
O ty, shalnoye ischadiye nochi beloi!
Ty chyornuyu nasylyesh metel na Rus,
I vopli tvoi vonzayutsya v nas, kak strely.

I my sharakhayemsya, i glukhoye: okh!
Stotysyachnoye – tebe prisyagayet. Anna
Akhmatova! Eto imya – ogromnyi vzdokh,
I v glub on padayet, kotoraya bezymyanna.

My koronavany tem, shto odnu s toboi
My zemlyu topchem, shto nebo nad nami – to zhe!
I tot, kto ranen smertelnoi tvoyei sudboi,
Uzhe bessmertnym na smertnoye skhodit lozhe.

V pevuchem grade moyom kupola goryat,
I Spasa svetlovo slavit slepets brodyachii …
I ya daryu svoi kolokolnyi grad,
– Akhmatova! – I serdtse svoyo v pridachu.

To Anna Akhmatova

O Muse of weeping, most beautiful of the muses!
O you reckless offspring of a white night!
You unleash a black blizzard on Russia,
And your howls pierce us, like arrows.

And we shrink back, and a mute “oh” is uttered
By hundreds of thousands in allegiance to you. Anna
Akhmatova! This name is an immense sigh,
Which falls into the void which is without name.

We are crowned by the fact that we tread
The same earth as you, that above us is the same sky!
And those who are wounded by your mortal fate
Will descend in immortality to their deathbeds.

In my city of songs, the domes burn brightly,
And a blind wanderer glorifies the radiant Saviour…
And I bestow on you my city of bells,
– Akhmatova! – Along with my heart as well.
