V tishi i mrake tainstvennoj nochi
Russian source: Afanasy Afanasyevich Fet

V tishi i mrake tainstvennoy nochi
Ya vizhu blesk privetnyi i miloi,
I v zvyozdnom nebe znakomye ochi
Goryat v stepi nad zabytoi mogiloi.

Trava poblekla, pustynya ugryuma,
I son sirotliv odinokoi grobnitsy,
I tol’ko v nebe, kak vechnaya duma,
Sverkayut zvyozd zolotye resnitsy.

I snitsya mne, chto ty vstala iz groba
Takoi zhe, kakoi ty s zemli otletela,
I snitsya, snitsya: my molody oba,
I ty vzglyanula, kak prezhde glyadela.

In the silence and darkness of the mysterious night
English translation © Philip Ross Bullock

In the silence and darkness of the mysterious night
I see the glimmer of something dear and friendly,
And in the starlit night, familiar eyes
Burn in the steppe above a forgotten grave.

The grass has grown pale, the wilderness is forlorn,
And the sleep of the solidary tomb is lonely,
And only in the heavens, like an eternal thought,
Do the golden lashes of the stars twinkle.

And in my dreams you rise from the grave,
No different from when you flew from the earth,
And I dream, I dream that are both young,
And you glanced at me, as you did back then.
