Produzhdeniye vesnï 'The Awakening of Spring'
Russian source: Sasha Chorny

Vchera moi kot vzglyanul na kalendar
I khvost truboyu podnyal momentalno.
Potom podral na lesnitsu, kak vstsar,
I zavopil teplo i vakkhanalno:
“Vesenii brak! Grazhdanskii brak!
Speshite, koshki, na cherdak!...”

I kaktus moi – o chudo iz chudes! –
Zalityi chayem i kofeinoi guchshei,
Kak novyi Lazar, vyzal da i voskres
I s kazhdym dnyom pryot iz zemli vsyo pushche.
Zelyonyi shum… Ya porazhen:
“Kak mnogo dum navodit on!”

Uzhe s panelei smyorzshuyusya gryaz,
Rugayas, skalyvayut dvorniki likhiye,
Uzhe ko mne zabryol sevodyna “knyaz”,
Vzyal tyoplyi sharf i lyzhi begovye…
“Vesna, vesna! – poyu, kak bard, –
Nesite zimnii khlam v lombard.”

Siyayet solnyshko. Yei-bogu, nichevo!
Vesenyaya lazur spugnula dym i kopot,
Moroz uzhe ne shchiplet nikovo,
No mnogim nechevo, kak i zimoyu, lopat…
Derevya zhdut… Gniyot voda,
I pyanykh bolshe, chem vsegda.

Sozdatel moi! Spasibo za vesnu! –
Ya dumal, one ne vozvratitsya,
No… dai sbezhat v lesnuyu tishinu
Ot zloby dnya, kholera i stolitsy!
Vesennii veter za dvermi…
V kovo v vlyubitsya, chyort vozmi?

The Awakening of Spring
English translation © Philip Ross Bullock

Yesterday my tomcat glanced at the calendar
And in a trice raised his tail like a pipe.
Then he raced out onto the stairs, as in the olden days,
And started to wail ardently and orgiastically:
“Spring marriage! Common-law marriage!
Hurry, my female feline friends, up to the attic!...”

And my cactus – oh miracle of miracles! –
Awash with tea leaves and coffee grounds,
Like a new Lazarus just upped and rose again
And with each new day thrusts ever more out of the soil.
The sound of spring… I’m struck dumb:
“So many thoughts it brings to mind!”

Intrepid street sweepers chip away
At the frozen mud on the streets, swearing as they work,
And today, the rag-and-bone man even popped by
To borrow a warm scarf and some skis…
“It’s spring, it’s spring! – I sing like some bard –
Take all your winter junk to the pawnbroker’s.”

The sun is shining bright. By Jove, this will do alright!
The blue of spring has scared off the smoke and soot,
And no one is nipped by the frost any more,
But many people, as in winter, still have nothing to eat…
The trees await… the water stagnates,
And there are more drunks around than ever.

Oh my Creator! Thank you for the spring! –
I thought it would never return,
But… Just let me escape to the silence of the woods,
Away from the malice of daily life, from spleen and from the city!
The breath of spring is outside my door…
Let me fall in love – what the hell!
