Po Griby ('Gathering mushrooms')
Russian source: Lev Aleksandrovich Mey

Ryzhichkov, volvjanochek,
Belykh beljanochek
Naberu skorjoshen'ko
Ja, mlada-mladjoshen'ka,
Chto dlja svjokra-batjushki,
Dlja svekrovi-matushki:
Perestali b skrjazhnichat' --
Seli by pobrazhnichat'.

A tebe, postylomu,
Staromu da khilomu,
Sunu ja v okoshechko
Polnoje lukoshechko,
Mukhomora starogo,
Starogo podzharogo ...
Staryj jest -- ne spravitsja:
Mukhomorom davitsja...

A tebe, trekljatomu,
Belu-kudrevatomu,
Vysmotrju ja travushku,
Travushku-muravushku,
Na postelju branuju,
Svakhoj-nochkoj stlanuju,
S pologom-dubrovushkoj
Da so mnoj li, vdovushkoj.

Gathering Mushrooms
English translation © Philip Ross Bullock

Mushrooms orange, brown and white,
Mushrooms of all sorts,
I shall quickly gather them all,
Young girl that I am,
So that my old father-in-law
And my mother-in-law,
Might cease being so miserly
And sit down and enjoy a feast.

But for you, old man,
Unkind and sickly,
I’ll slip through your window
A whole basket
Of old toadstools
Old and mangy…
The old man will eat them, but they won’t agree with him
And he’ll choke on a toadstool…

As for you, accursed one,
Blond and curly-haired one,
I shall seek out sheaves of grass,
Sheaves of soft grass,
To place upon the embroidered bed
That the matchmaker made up for us,
With an oak tree for a canopy,
And maybe me too, a young widow.
