Il pescatore "Batte il bronzo, il ciel s'imbruna"
Italian source: Achille Ricciardi

Batte il bronzo, il ciel s'imbruna,
Tutto tace nel riposo,
Sol di mezzo la laguna
Parte un canto di dolor;
Ad Elvira la canzona
Scioglie il fido pescator.

Perché ingrata abbandonasti
Questa sponda sospirata?
Forse un altro rallegrasti
Del tuo riso, vergin fior,
Se ogni bene avea riposto
In te sola il pescator.

Ah! per te, per te sospira
Questo petto innamorato,
Per te sola ognor delira
La mia mente e langue il cor;
Bella Elvira il canto ascolta
Del tradito pescator.

The fisherman "The great bell rings, the sky darkens"
English translation © Roger Parker & Opera Rara

The great bell rings, the sky darkens,
Everything is at rest and silent,
Only from the midst of the lagoon
Comes sorrowful singing;
The faithful fisherman pours forth
His song to Elvira.

Why, ungrateful one, did you abandon
These sighing shores?
Perhaps you made another happy
With your smile, virgin flower,
Even if the fisherman had placed
All his happiness in you.

Ah! for you, for you sighs
This loving breast,
For you alone
My mind raves and my heart languishes,
Fair Elvira, listen to the singing
Of the betrayed fisherman.
