Kindergeschichte

Wie oft der des Tages kam;
Denn wir spielten ja im dunklen Hausflur
Immer Braut und Bräutigam.
Und der grüne Puppenwagen,
Der war unser größtes Glück:
Unsre Kinder schliefen drinne,
Unsre Kinder, meine Puppen—dreizehn Stück.

How often he used to come by day;
For in the dark hall we used to play
At bride and bridegroom.
And the green dolls’ pram,
That was our greatest treasure:
Our children slept inside it,
Our children, my dolls—thirteen of them.

Und der Nachbarssohn, der Ruprecht,
And Ruprecht, the neighbour's son,
Wie oft der des Tages kam;
How often he used to come by day;
Denn wir spielten ja im dunklen Hausflur
For in the dark hall we used to play
Immer Braut und Bräutigam.
At bride and bridegroom.
