Menschenfeindlich
German source: Michael Beer

Gegen mich selber in Haß entbrannt,
Allein, allein, allein!

Nie gönnt mein Herz der Liebe Raum!
Ich hasse die Wirklichkeit, hasse den Traum,
Den Sommer, den Winter, die Frühlingszeit,
Was gestern ich haßte, das hass' ich auch heut;
So sitz' ich bei Mondes vertraulichem Schein
Und starr' in die leuchtende Nacht hinein,
Allein, allein, allein!

The misanthrope
English translation © Richard Stokes

Consumed with hatred against myself,
Shunned by many, misunderstood by all,
I sit all sunny day long
And listen to my heart's reluctant beating.
So I sit in the moon's intimate lights,
And stare into the shimmering night,
Alone, alone, alone!

My heart never makes room for love;
I hate reality, I hate illusion,
Summer, winter and springtime too.
What I hated yesterday, I still hate today.
So I sit in the moon's intimate lights,
And stare into the shimmering night,
Alone, alone, alone!
