Sehnsucht
German source: Marie Itzerott

Quellen rauschen,
Lüfte schweigen,
Lindenblüten duften sacht.
Durch die blaue, stille Nacht
Geht von Herz zu Herz ein Neigen,
Geht von Stern zu Stern ein Neigen
Durch die junge Sommerpracht;
Gab ich nicht in solcher Nacht
Meine Seele dir zu eigen.

Longing
English translation © Richard Stokes

Fountains murmur, breezes fall silent,
Linden trees shed gentle scent.
Through the blue, silent night
Hearts incline to one another,
Stars incline to one another
Through the young summer splendour;
Did I not in such a night
Surrender my heart to you?
