Text & Translation

Unser Feind ist, großer Gott
German source: Alfred Kerr

Unser Feind ist, grosser Gott,
Wie der Brite so der Schott.
Manchen hat er unentwegt
Auf das Streckbett hingelegt.
Täglich wird er kecker—
O du Strecker!

Our enemy, good God
English translation © Richard Stokes

The Scot, good God, is our foe
As much as the Briton.
Many a man he’s stretched on the rack,
Many a time and oft;
Each day he grows bolder—
O you torturer!
