Uzh gasli v komnatakh ogni 'Inside the lights were already growing dim'
Russian source: Panteleimon Romanov

Už gasli v komnatah ogni...
Blagouhali rozy...
My seli na skamʹju v teni
razvesistoj berëzy.

My byli molody s toboj!
Tak sčastlivy my byli
nas okružavšeju vesnoj,
tak gorjačo ljubili!

Dvurogij mesjac navodil
na nas svoë sijanʹe;
ja ničego ne govoril,
bojasʹ prervatʹ molčanʹe...

Bezmolvno sinih glaz tvoih
ty opuskala vzory –
krasnorečivej slov inyh
nemye razgovory.

Čego ne smel poveritʹ ja,
čto v serdce ty taila, –
vsë eto pesnja solovʹja
za nas dogovorila.

Inside the lights were already growing dim
English translation © Philip Ross Bullock

Inside the lights were already growing dim…
The air was filled with the scent of roses…
We sat down on a bench in the shade
Or a leafy birch tree.

You and I were young then!
How happy we were
In the spring that was all around us,
How ardent was the love we shared!

The crescent moon cast down
Its radiant light upon us;
I didn’t say a word,
Afraid to break the silence…

Saying nothing, you lowered
Your deep blue eyes –
More eloquent than any words
Are mute conversations.

What I did not dare believe,
What you kept hidden in your heart –
All of this was articulated for us
By the song of the nightingale.
