Zum Schluss
German source: Friedrich Rückert

Hier in diesen erdbeklommnen
Lüften, wo die Wehmut taut,
Hab ich dir den unvollkommnen
Kranz geflochten, Schwester, Braut!
Wenn uns, droben aufgenommen,
Gottes Sonn’ entgegenschaut,
Wird die Liebe den vollkommnen
Kranz uns flechten, Schwester, Braut!

At the Last
English translation © Richard Stokes

Here in these earth-stifled
Breezes, where sadness dissolves like dew,
I’ve fashioned you that imperfect
Garland, sister, bride!
When we are received above
And God’s sun looks upon us,
Love shall fashion for us the perfect
Garland, sister, bride!

Translations by Richard Stokes, author of The Book of Lieder (Faber, 2005)
