17. Mark Padmore & Elizabeth Kenny: Sonnets in Song

17 October 2022, 5:15pm - 6:15pm

We are delighted to welcome Mark Padmore as our Artist in Residence this year. For this very special first event of his residency, he is joined by world-renowned lutenist Elizabeth Kenny, and together they continue our exploration of lute-songs as a vital part of the history of song.

Elizabethan songwriters were attracted to the expressive possibilities of the sonnet form, and this recital features sonnets by Samuel Danyel and Sir Phillip Sidney.  But until now, there has been a musical void where Shakespeare's sonnets might live.  Ross Duffin, scholar and author of Shakespeare's Songbook has recently completed a project matching some of the best-loved sonnets to pre-existing tunes from the lute-song repertory.  Mark and Liz will perform some of these for the very first time, alongside songs by John Danyel, Thomas Morley and John Dowland.

They perform in the beautiful chapel of Somerville College, easily placed for those heading on to the Catch Club event at Freud afterwards (with food available between events!).

Mark will return for further events this week: an 'in-conversation' and lecture-recital on Britten and his poets on Thursday 20 October; and a Schubert recital with Till Fellner on Saturday 22 October. In Week Two of the Festival, he will lead our residential Mastercourse.

All our seating is unreserved within your ticket area; please arrive in good time to take your seat. For groups of more than 10, please phone or email the box office to book your tickets.

The event duration is approximately 1 hour and there will be no interval.
