69. Joshua Stewart, Deirdre Brenner: Nightsongs

Joshua Stewart's and Deirdre Brenner's appearance last year was picked as a highlight in The Guardian Festival roundup, and we are delighted to welcome them back. They continue an exploration of the rich history of American art song, with a focus this year on settings of Langston Hughes by many of his friends and admirers. Included in the programme are songs by H. Leslie Adams, Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, John Musto and Ricky Ian Gordon.

Below, you can watch a short extract of Joshua and Deirdre's 2021 Festival performance of Adolphus Hailstork's 'Decisions', from his cycle Songs of Love and Justice, setting the words of Martin Luther King Jr. Fiona Maddocks's review in The Guardian wrote: "When Stewart uttered “justice” at the top of his considerable and powerful voice, that ringing note may or may not have shaken the rafters of St John the Evangelist church, but it surely rattled the conscience of anyone listening."
