Christianne Stotijn last came to The Oxford Lieder Festival in 2004, since which time her career has taken off in the most spectacular way. As well as receiving an Echo Rising Stars Award and the Borletti Buitoni Award, she has worked with conductors such as Sir Andrew Davis, Philippe Herreweghe and Bernard Haitink, and has given recitals at Wigmore Hall, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Konzerthaus and the Musikverein in Vienna, and New York’s Carnegie Hall. She works regularly with pianist Julius Drake, by now a familiar face at the Festival, with whom she recorded her second highly acclaimed recital disc of Mahler songs.

Grieg’s Op. 48 songs are some of his only works that set German texts, including Goethe’s famed “Zur Rosenzeit”. They are a captivating set, from the shoulder-shrugging “Lauf der Welt” (“way of the world”) to the thunderous climax of “Ein Traum”. Maintaining a Scandinavian flavour, Christianne Stotijn and Julius Drake will also perform Schumann’s beautiful settings of Hans Christian Andersen. The second half will include Brahms’ Vier ernste Gesänge (“Four serious songs”), which contain some of his most personal and profound writing.
