Measha Brueggergosman & Roger Vignoles

20 October 2007, 8:00pm

"We were present at the birth of a star…. a voice to match her dramatic stage presence."
Wall Street Journal at the 2004 Edinburgh Festival
"When Measha Brueggergosman began singing in the little church in Verbier, there was something that went way beyond song, above technique. It was heart-breaking. She possesses one of the most glorious voices around, and a joy of performing that reaches out to all her audience."

Measha Brueggergosman is one of the most exciting talents to emerge from Canada in recent years. She has already performed on many of the world’s major stages and recently signed an exclusive recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon. On the recital platform, where she often works with acclaimed accompanist Roger Vignoles, Measha makes a particular feature of introducing music that audiences may not know but are sure to love. This evening’s concert offers just that, with a particular emphasis on cabaret songs.

Taking texts by W H Auden, whose centenary falls this year, Britten’s four Cabaret Songs (including the line “Does it look like a pair of pyjamas? Oh, tell me the truth about love”!) open the programme, followed by a selection of Schönberg’s delightfully wicked Brettl Lieder. A second half of Poulenc and Satie is rounded off by some William Bolcom, the contemporary American composer lastheard at the Festival in 2005 with Jonathan Lemalu’s hilarious rendition of some of the songs we will hear this evening.
