As the end of The Schumann Project approaches, Laura Tunbridge leads a fascinating study day on Schumann's later works and on his legacy, including two fantastic concerts featuring singers Aoife Miskelly, Johnny Herford and James Gilchrist.

 

LATE STYLE & LEGACY PART 1

10.30am Welcome and coffee

11am Laura Tunbridge introduces the 'problems' associated with Schumann's later works. 

11.30am Natasha Loges talks about the arrival of Brahms in the Schumanns' lives in 1853, and both the creative inspiration and the difficulties that followed. 

12 pm Lunch break

 

LUNCHTIME CONCERT: ROBERT, CLARA & JOHANNES

1.10pm Lunchtime recital given by Aoife Miskelly, Johnny Herford & William Vann (please see lunchtime listing for more information). This lunchtime recital is included in the Late Style & Legacy ticket.

 

LATE STYLE & LEGACY PART II

2.30pm  Laura Tunbridge talks with Dr John Spicer about Schumann's final illness and years in the asylum in Bonn. 

CONCERT: 3.15pm (Holywell Music Room) - Ensemble ISIS, the University of Oxford's contemporary music ensemble, perform Robin Holloway's Fantasy Pieces on the Heine Liederkreis of Schumann, with pianist Maki Sekiya, which incorporates a performance by James Gilchrist and Maki Sekiya of the Op. 24 Liederkreis. Introduced by the composer. 

4.30pm Robert Saxton, Professor at the Oxford Faculty of Music, talks with composer Robin Holloway about their experiences of Schumann and the part his music has played in their own compositional lives.
