Franz Schubert (1797 - 1828)
Die schöne Müllerin - D795
Supported by Diana Hiddleston
The twenty settings of Wilhelm Müller that comprise Die schöne Müllerin show Schubert at the peak of his ability. Where in Winterreise the protagonist is in despair from the start and almost has a glimpse of redemption at the end, here he goes out a happy, carefree young man and is driven to madness at his rejection by the miller’s daughter. Many of Schubert’s most popular songs can be found in this cycle.
Christopher Maltman is one of the great British baritones of today, and he is joined by pianist Graham Johnson OBE, internationally acknowledged as a luminary on the performance of Schubert and whose recording of the complete songs of Schubert are a milestone in musical history.
