Richard Stokes explores Berlioz' great cycle, Les Nuits dété
Described in the Times as “a classy act: a light, agile mezzo of great charm and elegant intelligence”, Clara Mouriz gathers universal acclaim for her stunning voice and powers of communication. She and pianist Joseph Middleton present a programme including some haunting works by Granados, some of Schubert’s few settings of Italian texts and Berlioz’s remarkable Les Nuits dété. These latter songs are perhaps better known in their orchestral version, but were originally written for voice and piano. Berlioz, setting texts by his friend Théophile Gautier, produced in this cycle some of his most inventive and lyrical songs; his great contribution to the song repertoire.
