Text & Translation

Abschied (Es wehn die Wolken über Meer)
German source: Anon.

Es wehn die Wolken über Meer,
Die See, sie brandet hohl,
Des Kindes Glück ist tränenschwer.
Noch einmal lebe wohl!
Noch einmal drückt er sie ans Herz,
Sie sieht ihm nach: ‘Ade!’
Die Wolken jagen abendwärts,
Es braust die wilde See.

Clouds scud over the ocean
translation © Richard Stokes

Clouds scud over the ocean,
The waves break with a hollow sound,
The child’s joy is laden with tears.
Farewell once more!
Once more he presses her to his heart,
She gazes after him: ‘Goodbye!’
The clouds sweep towards the West,
The wild sea roars.
