An den Abendstern
German source: Elisabeth Kulmann

Schweb’ empor am Himmel,
Schöner Abendstern!
Sieht im Glanzgewimmel
Jeder dich ja gern.

Geh’n sie auf, geh’n nieder
Sie am Himmelsrand,
Keinen deiner Brüder
Schmückt ein solch Gewand.

To the evening star
English translation © Richard Stokes

Climb the sky,
Beautiful evening star!
All the starry throng
Love to look at you.

They travel up and down
The heavens’ margin,
None of your brethren
Has such a lovely raiment.
