Wollt jagen auf Himmels Höhn,
Was begegnet ihm auf der Heiden,
Maria, die Jungfrau schön.
Der Jäger, den ich meine,
Der ist uns wohl bekannt,
Er jagt mit einem Engel,
Gabriel ist er genannt.
Der Jäger bließ in sein Hörnlein,
Es lautet also wohl:
“Gegrüßt seyst du Maria,
“Du bist aller Gnaden voll.
“Gegrüßt seyst du Maria,
“Du edle Jungfrau fein,
“Dein Leib soll dir gebähren,
“Ein kleines Kindelein.
“Dein Leib soll dir gebähren,
“Ein Kindlein ohn einen Mann,
“Das Himmel und die Erde
“Einsmals zwingen kann.”
Maria die viel reine,
Fiel nieder auf ihre Knie,
Dann bat sie Gott vom Himmel:
“Dein Will gescheh allhie.
“Dein Will der soll geschehen,
“Ohn Pein und sonder Schmerz.”
Da empfing sie Jesum Christum
Unter ihr jungfräuliches Herz.

On the heavenly heights,
Whom should he encounter on the heath?
Mary, the beautiful Virgin.
The hunter I mean
Is well known to us all,
He hunts with an angel,
Gabriel is his name.
The hunter blew his horn,
It had a lovely sound:
‘All hail to you, Mary,
You are full of grace.
All hail to you, Mary,
You noble Virgin,
Your body shall bear you
A little child.
Your body shall bear you
A child without a man,
A child that heaven and earth
Can fashion.’
Mary so pure
Fell to her knees,
Then spoke to the God of Heaven:
‘Thy will shall be done.
Thy will shall be done,
Without anguish and without pain.’
Whereupon she received Jesus Christ
In her virginal heart.
