Hör ich die liebe Drossel nur,

Man fängt dem Kind die Drossel ein

Doch singen will sie nicht und hängt

Noch einmal blickt das Kind nach ihr
Mit bittendem Gesicht
Da schlägt die Drossel schön und hell
Da glänzt sein Aug' und bricht!

I wish to lie here all summer long,
If I can only hear the dear thrush
That sang in the undergrowth!’
The thrush is captured for the child,
There it is in the cage,
But it has no wish to sing, and hangs
Its little head without respite.
Once more the child looks at it
With a pleading expression,
Brightly and beautifully the thrush then sings,
Its eyes gleam—and it dies.
