Die Stickerin
German source: Otilie Malybrok-Stieler

Wie gross ist doch der Segen,
der in der Arbeit liegt!
Sie kommt auf Leidenswegen
als Engel uns entgegen,
und Thrän' auf Thräne versiegt.

Oft meint' ich zu vergehen
in allzu bitt'rem Schmerz!
So lang die Augen sehen
beim Sticken und beim Nähen,
wie wird so still das Herz!

Den Trost in Leidensstunden
giebt nur die Arbeit mir:
sie heilt die Herzenswunden
durch sie hab' ich gefunden
mein Heil auf Erden hier.

The embroideress
English translation © Richard Stokes

How great is the bliss
That work affords us!
Into our life of suffering
Work comes as an angel,
And our tears gradually dry.

I often thought I’d perish
With all too bitter pain!
As long as I have the sight
To knit and sew,
My heart will fall silent!

Work alone can comfort me
In my hours of suffering:
Work heals the heart’s wounds,
It is through work that I have found
Salvation here on earth.
