Die Weinende
German source: Körner, Theodor

Ich sah dich weinen! Ach, die Zähre
Schwamm auf des Auges Blau;
Und dieses Auge, dacht’ ich, wäre
Ein Veilchen, nass vom Tau.
Ich sah dich lächeln; Saphirschimmer
Trat matt vor dir zurück,
Den regen Glanz erreicht’ er nimmer,
Der strahlt’ aus deinem Blick.

I Saw Thee Weep
English translation © George Gordon, Lord Byron

I saw thee weep, the big bright tear
Came o’er that eye of blue;
And then methought it did appear
A violet dropping dew;
I saw thee smile—the sapphire’s blaze
Beside thee ceased to shine;
It could not match the living rays
That filled that glance of mine.
