Einst kam der Bock als Bote
German source: Alfred Kerr

Einst kam der Bock als Bote
Zum Rosenkavalier ans Haus;
Er klopft mit seiner Pfote,
Den Eingang wehrt ein Rosenstrauss.

Der Strauss sticht seine Dornen schnell
Dem Botenbock durch’s dicke Fell.
O Bock, zieh mit gesenktem
Sterz Hinterwärts, hinterwärts!

The goat once came as messenger
English translation © Richard Stokes

The Goat once came as Messenger
To the Rosenkavalier’s house;
He knocked with his hoof –
A Bouquet of roses guarded the door.

The Bouquet swiftly stuck its thorns
Into the Goat-Messenger’s thick hide.
O Goat, back out, back out
With your tail between your legs!
