Frühlingsgrüsse

Nach langem Frost, wie weht die Luft so lind!
Da bringt Frühveilchen mir ein bettelnd Kind.

Es ist betrübt, daß so den ersten Gruß
Des Frühlings mir das Elend bringen muß.

Und doch der schönen Tage liebes Pfand
Ist mir noch werter aus des Unglücks Hand.

So bringt dem Nachgeschlechte unser Leid
Die Frühlingsgrüße einer bessern Zeit.

After a long frost, how gently blows the breeze!
A beggar child brings me spring violets.

The child is sad that such wretchedness
Should bring me spring’s first greeting.

And yet a dear pledge of beautiful days
Is still dearer to me when given by misery.

Our suffering thus brings posterity
Spring greetings of happier days.
