ja v oslepitelʹnoj nadežde
blaženstvo temnoe zovu,
ja negu žizni uznaju!
Ja pʹju volšebnyj jad želanij!
menja presledujut mečty!
Vezde, vezde peredo mnoj
Moj iskusitelʹ rokovoj!
Vezde, vezde, on predo mnoju!
(Bystro pišet, no totčas že rvet napisannoe)
Net, vse ne to! Načnu snačala!
Ah, čto so mnoj! ja vsja gorju!
Ne znaju, kak načatʹ...
(Zadumyvaetsja, potom snova načinaet pisatʹ.)
Ja k vam pišu, – čego že bole?
Čto ja mogu ešče skazatʹ?
Teperʹ, ja znaju, v vašej vole
Menja prezrenʹem nakazatʹ!
No vy, k moej nesčastnoj dole
Hotʹ kaplju žalosti hranja,
Vy ne ostavite menja.
Snačala ja molčatʹ hotela;
Poverʹte, moego styda
Vy ne uznali b nikogda, nikogda!
(Zadumyvaetsja.)
O da, kljalasʹ ja sohranitʹ v duše
Priznanʹe v strasti pylkoj i bezumnoj!
Uvy! ne v silah ja vladetʹ svoej dušoj!
Pustʹ budet to, čto bytʹ dolžno so mnoj!
Emu priznajusʹ ja! Smelej! On vse uznaet!
(Prodolžaet pisatʹ.)
Začem, začem vy posetili nas?
V gluši zabytogo selenʹja
Ja b nikogda ne znala vas,
Ne znala b gorʹkogo mučenʹja.
Duši neopytnoj volnenʹja
Smiriv, so vremenem, kak znatʹ?
Po serdcu ja našla by druga,
Byla by vernaja supruga
I dobrodetelʹnaja matʹ...
Drugoj! Net, nikomu na svete
Ne otdala by serdca ja!
To v Vyšnem suždeno sovete,
To volja neba: ja tvoja!
Vsja žiznʹ moja byla zalogom
Svidanʹja vernogo s toboj;
Ja znaju: ty mne poslan Bogom,
Do groba ty hranitelʹ moj.
Ty v snovidenʹjah mne javljalsja,
Nezrimyj, ty už byl mne mil,
Tvoj čudnyj vzgljad menja tomil,
В душе твой голос раздавался.
Davno... net, èto byl ne son!
Ty čutʹ vošel, ja vmig uznala...
Vsja obomlela, zapylala,
I v mysljah molvila: vot on! Vot on!
Ne pravda lʹ! Ja tebja slyhala...
Ty govoril so mnoj v tiši,
Kogda ja bednym pomogala,
Или молитвой услаждалa
Tosku volnuemoj duši?
I v èto samoe mgnovenʹe
Ne ty li, miloe videnʹe,
V prozračnoj temnote melʹknul,
Priniknuv tiho k izgolovʹju?
Ne ty lʹ s otradoj i ljubovʹju
Slova nadeždy mne šepnul?
Kto ty, moj angel li hranitelʹ
Ili kovarnyj iskusitelʹ?
Moi somnenʹja razreši.
Bytʹ možet, èto vse pustoe,
Obman neopytnoj duši,
I suždeno sovsem inoe?..
No tak i bytʹ! Sudʹbu moju
Otnyne ja tebe vručaju,
Pered toboju slezy lʹju,
Tvoej zaŝity umoljaju, umoljaju!
Voobrazi: ja zdesʹ odna!
Nikto menja ne ponimaet!
Rassudok moj iznemogaet,
I molča gibnutʹ ja dolžna!
Ja ždu tebja, ja ždu tebja!
Edinim slovom
Nadeždy serdca oživi,
Ilʹ son tjaželyj perervi.
Uvy, zaslužennym ukorom!
Končaju, strašno perečestʹ,
Stydom i strahom zamiraju,
No mne porukoj vaša čestʹ.
I smelo ej sebja vverjaju!

Let me – in dazzling hope –
Summon up the bliss I have yet to know,
May I know life’s ecstasy!
I drink the magic potion of desire!
By fantasies I am beset!
Wherever I look around me
My fatal tempter is there!
Wherever I look, he is there!
(She writes quickly, then suddenly tears everything up)
No, that’s all wrong! Let me begin again!
Oh, what’s with me? I’m all on fire!
I don’t know how to begin…
(Pauses to reflect, then begins to write again)
I am writing to you – and then?
What else is there for me to say?
Now, I know, it is in your power
To punish me with your contempt!
But if you have one jot of pity
For my unhappy lot,
You will not abandon me.
At first I didn’t want to say a word;
Believe me, never would you have known
My shame, never!
(Pauses to reflect.)
Oh yes, I swore to confine within my soul
This confession of a mad and ardent passion!
Alas! I lack the strength to subdue my soul!
What will be with me will be!
I will confess everything to him! Courage! He’ll learn it all!
(Continues to write.)
Why, oh why did you come to visit us?
Deep in this provincial backwater,
I should never have come to know you,
Not would I have known such bitter torment.
The sufferings of a guileless soul
Would, perchance, have passed with time?
I would have fallen for another man,
Been a faithful wife
And virtuous mother too…
Another man! No – not to any other man in the world
Would I have given my heart!
Decreed by the highest authority above,
’Tis the will of heaven: I am yours!
My whole life has been a pledge
Of this faithful encounter with you;
This I know: you’ve been send by God,
You’ll be my keeper ’til the grave.
In dreams you did appear to me,
As yet unseen, you were already dear to me,
Your wondrous gaze filled me with anguish,
You voice resounded in my soul.
So long ago… no, it was no dream!
As soon as you walked in, I immediately recognised you…
I swooned, began to blaze with passion,
And inwardly I said: ’Tis he! ’Tis he!
I know it to be true! I heard you…
Was it you who spoke with me in the silence,
When I was ministering to the poor,
Or when in prayer I sought to assuage
The suffering of my anguished soul?
Was is not you, my dearest vision,
Whom in that very moment
I glimpsed in the pellucid darkness,
Stooping quietly at my bed?
Was it not you who, with joy and love,
Whispered words of hope to me?
Who are you? My guardian angel
Or some wily tempter?
Dispel my doubts.
Perhaps this is all an empty dream,
The deception of a guileless soul,
And another fate awaits me?..
So be it! My fate
Henceforth I entrust myself to you,
Before you, I pour forth my tears,
I implore your protection, I implore!
Please imagine: I’m all alone here!
No one understands me!
Reason fails me,
I must perish in silence!
I await you, I await you!
With a single world
You can revive my heart’s hopes,
Or shatter this oppressive dream, alas,
With the scorn I have deserved!
And so I finish – I dare not read it back again,
I swoon with shame and fear,
But your honour is my guarantee.
And in that honour I place my trust!
