Lied „In meinem Garten die Nelken“
German source: Emanuel Geibel

In meinem Garten die Nelken,
Mit ihrem Purpurstern,
Müssen nun alle verwelken,
Denn du bist fern.

Auf meinem Herde die Flammen,
Die ich bewacht so gern,
Sanken zu Asche zusammen,
Denn du bist fern.

Die Welt ist mir verdorben,
Mich grüsst nicht Blume, nicht Stern,
Mein Herz ist lange gestorben,
Denn du bist fern! so fern!

Song
English translation © Richard Stokes

The carnations in my garden
With their purple star
Must now all wither,
For you are far away.

The flames in my hearth
That I have tended so willingly,
Have sunk to ashes,
For you are far away.

The world for me is ruined,
Neither flower nor star greets me;
My heart has long since died,
For you are far away.
