Scherzo
Russian source: Osip Mandelstam

Zhil Aleksandr Gertsevich,
Evreyskiy muzykant, –
On Shuberta navechival,
Kak chistyy brilliant.

I vlast’, s utra do vechera,
Zauchennuyu vskruz’,
Odnu sonatu vechnuyu
Igral do naizust’...

Chto, Aleksandr Gertsevich,
Na ulitse temno?
Bros’, Aleksandr Serdtsevich, –
Chego tam? Vse ravno!

Puskay tam italyanochka,
Pokuda sneg kruchit,
Na uzen’kikh na sanochkakh
Za Shubertom letit:

Nam s muzykoy-goluboy
Ne strashno umeret’,
Tam khot’ voronoy shuboy
Na veshalku vesit’...

Vse, Aleksandr Gertsevich,
Zaversheno davno.
Bros’, Aleksandr Skrebtsevich.
Chego tam! Vse ravno!

Scherzo
English translation © Andrew Kahn

There lived one Alexander Herzovich,
A Jewish musician:
He polished his Schubert night and day
To the brilliance of a diamond.

From morning to night, morning to night,
He practised endlessly, again and again,
One single, eternal sonata
And played it by heart...

Look, Alexander Herzovich,
It's already dark outside, no?
Give it up, Alexander Herzovich,
What you're on about - it doesn't matter.

Let some Italian wench,
While the snow still crackles,
Fly along after Schubert
On her narrow little sleigh-

With this dove-blue music
It's not so hard to die,
Just let it hang there a while
Like a raven-black coat.

That's all, Alexander Herzovich,
Everything is over long ago:
Give it up, Alexander Scherzovich,
It's pointless! Nothing matters!
