Shche jak buly my kozakamy 'When We Were Cossacks'
Ukrainian source: Taras Hryhorovych Shevchenko

Shche jak buly my kozakamy,
A un’iji ne chut' bulo,
Otam-to veselo zhylos'!
Bratalys' z vol'nymy ljakhamy,
Pyshalys' vol'nymy stepamy,
V sadakh kokhalysja, tsvily,
Nenache l’il’iji, d’ivchata.
Pyshalasja synamy maty,
Synamy vol'nymy... rosly,
Rosly syny i veselyly
Stariji skorbn’iji l’ita...
Azh poky imenem Khrysta
Pryjshly ks'ondzy i zapalyly
Nash tykhyj raj. I rozlyly
Shyroke more sl'oz i krovi,
A syrot imenem Khrystovym
Zamorduvaly, rozpjaly...
Ponykly holovy kozachi,
Nenache stoptana trava.
Ukrajna plache, stohne - plache!
Za holovoju holova
Dodolu pada. Kat ljutuje,
A ks'ondz skazhenym jazykom
Krychyt': “Te Deum! Alyluja!...”

When we were Cossacks
English translation © Natalka Pasicznyk and Bohdana Ravliuk

Still when were we Cossacks
And the Union of Brest was not heard of,
There happily was lived!
We fraternized with free Poles,
We were proud of the free steppes,
In orchards loved, blossomed,
As though lilies were the girls
Was proud of her sons a mother,
Sons free… they grew,
Grew the sons and gave joy to
Old sorrowful years…
Right until in the name of Christ
Came Roman Catholic priests and set aflame
Our quiet paradise. And spilled
A wide sea of tears and blood,
And orphans in the name of Christ
They murdered, crucified…
The Cossack heads drooped,
Just like trampled grass.
Ukraine weeps, groans - weeps!
After one head another head
To the ground falls. The hangman rages,
And the Roman Catholic priest with furious tongue
Screams: “Te Deum! Hallelujah!...”
