Des Sultans Pracht, des Mogols Geld
The sultan’s splendour, the mogul’s wealth,
Des Glück, wie hiess er doch,
the good fortune of – what was his name?
Der, als er Herr war von der Welt,
He who, when ruler of the world,
Zum Mond hinauf sah noch?
still gazed up at the moon.
Ich wünsche nichts von alle dem,
I desire none of that;
Zu lächeln drob fällt mir bequem.
I prefer to smile at it.

Zufrieden sein, das ist mein Spruch!
To be content, that is my motto!
Was hülf’ mir Geld und Ehr?
What use would I have for wealth and honour?
Das, was ich hab’, ist mir genug,
What I have is enough for me.
Wer klug ist, wünscht nichts sehr;
He who is wise does not desire much;
Denn, was man wünschet, wenn man’s hat,
for when people have what they desire
So ist man darum doch nicht satt.

Recht tun und edel sein und gut
To do right, to be generous and good,
Ist mehr als Geld und Ehr;
is more than wealth and honour;
Da hat man immer guten Mut
such a man is always in good spirits,
Und Freude um sich her,
with joy around him;
Und man ist stolz und mit sich eins,
he is proud and at one with himself,
Scheut kein Geschöpf und fürchtet keins.
